Funding Priorities

  • The Union Benevolent Association makes grants to serve people in need within Philadelphia.
  • The Union Benevolent Association funds projects that support low-income individuals and communities, people with disabilities, vulnerable populations and people who are disenfranchised.
  • UBA prioritizes support for projects that serve seniors/elderly or children/youth.
  • While the Union Benevolent Association is specifically interested in combating poverty, increasing employment, furthering education and improving health, we will consider proposals which uniquely address issues affecting the priority populations described above.

Eligibility

  • The Union Benevolent Association makes grants only to nonprofit organizations recognized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  • Small, new and/or grassroots efforts may be eligible if they partner with a recognized 501(c)(3) organization acting as a fiscal sponsor.
  • The Union Benevolent Association does not make grants to individuals.
  • The Union Benevolent Association only makes grants to organizations that serve people within Philadelphia.
  • The Union Benevolent Association does not make grants to support capital renovations, major building campaigns or endowments.
  • The Union Benevolent Association will only fund an organization for three out of the past five years. If your organization has received three years of funding between 2011 – 2007, you are not eligible to apply in 2012.

Types of Funding provided by the Union Benevolent Association

  • Micro-grants.Organizations may apply for grants below $1,000 for small projects. Priority will be given to organizations with operating budgets below $250,000.
  • General Operating Support.Only organizations with operating budgets under $500,000 are eligible to apply. Grant ranges $1,000 – $5,000.
  • Project Support.Priority will be given to organizations with operating budgets below $2 million. Grant ranges $1,000 – $5,000.

How to Apply

Please note: UBA is no longer accepting the DVG Common Application Form.

Application Instructions:

  • If you are logging in for the first time, you will be asked to create an account.
  • Once you create an account and a password, you will be able to log in using your email address and the password you created.
  • After you log in, to apply for a grant, click on "Apply" and click on the type of grant for which you are submitting an application.
    • For Micro-grants, click on: "Micro-grant"
    • For project support or general operating support requests, click on: "Standard Grant"
  • During the application process, you may need to scan in and upload certain documents.
    • If you do not have a scanner, please use the "Fax to File" tool. Click on "Fax to File" and instructions will be provided.

Additional Instructions for Organization without Nonprofit Status from the IRS.

If your organization does not have an IRS determination under section 501(c)(3), you may apply for a grant by partnering with a recognized 510(c)(3) nonprofit, which would serve as your fiscal sponsor.

Within the application, you will be asked to provide the following:

  • Fiscal Sponsor's Tax ID number
  • Fiscal Sponsor Letter of Agreement
  • Fiscal Sponsor's Board List
  • Fiscal Sponsor's audited Financial Statements
